Salt: A World History by Mark Kurlansky

My rating: 3 of 5 stars


Kurlansky should be commended for this general reader "biography" of one of the world's most essential minerals. It was nice to read about the various ways in which salt affected national and world economies throughout all of time, but often I found the book too intricate, with the materials presented in too haphazard a fashion. Such a rhetorical strategy might be okay, if Kurlansky were a somewhat more engaging writer with a more scintillating writing style.

I'm glad I got through it though - it's been on my TBR for a long time, and I hope others enjoy it.
