I never knew my mother-in-law. She died before I and my husband first met. But there are still some of her possessions in our house, and amongst them, a great stack of paperback books. I have my husband's permission to read whichever ones I wish to, and to release them on afterwards. It feels like I'm getting to finally know her slightly!

This has been on my shelf for ages and I always assumed it was fiction. But turns out it's a collection of Steinbeck's despatches from 1943 when he travelled as a war correspondent. There are a few that are a bit dull, but the vast majority were fascinating. There are loads and loads of small anecdotes that bring the war to life so to speak.

During times when there is once again war in Europe, and I read about it daily, it was almost comforting to be reminded that generations have lived through bombing and other terrible moments previously, and the majority should get through it ok.

I always try and theme my November reading around Remembrance and wartime memoirs. I doubt I'll get this read this year, but will look forward to it next November.
