Read in Mallorca. I bought this for an upcoming bookclub meeting.
I had no idea what this was about and had not even read the back cover before plunging in. It took me a bit to figure out what an AF was, but it was interesting to feel my way forward with no clues. For a story about machines, this was surprisingly moving.
There were a few details which remained opaque to me - the question of lifted and unlifted children, for example (I think that's the term, but flipping back through the pages I don't find it) - presumably therein lies danger? At the meeting at Josie's house, one of the mothers asks if Rick's parents' lost their nerve, so perhaps whatever the procedure is, it's not foolproof... and McBain's barn, a partial replica of the original shop?
Confusing, but not such that all is spoiled. An intriguing read.
