After her mother dies, Adunni's father can no longer afford to live the way he used to, and he isn't interested in educating a girl - so he sells her off to an older man as a third wife. But Adunni doesn't want marriage, her mother told her that education would give her a voice, and Adunni wants a louding voice. Her dream is to become a teacher and to help the village children to learn. Forced to run from her village, Adunni travels to Lagos to live with a wealthy family, but her life is not improved. Despite the awful things that happen to her, she is still determined to learn, and while some resent her joyful spirit, she will not keep quiet. I absolutely love this, I was very quickly caught up in Adunni's story and found it hard to put down, though it's awful to think there may be girls in Nigeria going through this sort of thing today.
