Be prepared to have your basic infant-rearing assumptions exploded. There are people on this planet who, when told that Americans place their newborns in a cage-like bed away from their parents, react in disbelief. If you have an infant who demands,
as mine did, to be held constantly, be assured that your baby is quite normal, and that such holding is not "spoiling" but contributes greatly to the emotional development of your child. Liedloff confirms that it is true human nature to hold and to be held, to be with all ages of people rather than age-segregated, to learn the work of the family at an early age (though without the expectation of "producing" anything), and
that there is no need to have a "baby-centered" mindset but rather to proceed with one's own tasks in life, with the baby included. Easier said than done, perhaps, but much to think about in this book. Note that this is not an easy read but takes time and consideration.
