'Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge'

More than fifty years on, Iris Chase is remembering Laura's mysterious death. And so begins an extraordinary and compelling story of two sisters and their secrets. Set against a panormaic backdrop of twentieth-century history, The Blind Assassin is an epic tale of memory, intrigue and betrayal.

Not my favourite Atwood book. Engaging in parts, and interesting for its sheer span of history told in the first person, not to mention the point of view of an old lady on some aspects of her life (relatives, living on her own, her failing health). But I found it annoyingly subtle in some bits - sometimes I am not very clever at spotting veiled references and I just want to be told whodunnit. I am still not 100% sure what happened in the end!

Lent to a non-BC friend, but available after that...

I enjoyed this book a lot. Although the story is heavily-tinged with melancholy and deals (at length) with the themes of love, loss and separation, the scope and structure of the novel and the quality and rich detail of Atwood's writing counter-balance this to provide a very rewarding read.
