Daisy Jones & The Six

I chose this book based on a magazine rec, and because it's right in my wheelhouse—as a child of the 1970s, I inhaled that era's rock and roll greats, most especially Fleedwood Mac, Queen, Bowie, etc. The format initially seemed a little superficial, clumsy, and more of a neat trick than anything that would serve a story, but I got into its rhythm within a few dozen pages or so.
Is the theme overly original? No. Are the characters? No. Still, I did get a feel for them, the central conflict, and also a bit of 1970s attitude and atmosphere. But I primarily got the feeling that the author chose to write the book in interview format not so much because she was emulating a classic rock magazine article style (which admittedly is clever) but because she didn't really have a grasp on how to tell the story in straight narrative. That would have been a much more complex thing to try and accomplish. And it might have made for a better book.
Another complaint is that while I could "see" the characters, I couldn't "hear" the music. I know that's a tough thing to describe, but I kept trying to figure out exactly what kind of music The Six played, and I couldn't connect them to any band of that era, except maybe Fleetwood Mac. As for straight-forward blues-rock bands? Those were British, not American.
