From the files of Garrett P.I. While most people may consider him a Mike Hammer, Phillip Marlow type hardboiled detective. I've always felt he was more of a James Rockford. Anyway, he solves problems and mysteries, and goes up against incredible odds and incresingly impressive opponents in every one of his books. Always being noble, and mostly honorable, and even occasionally turning a buck. The thing is his world is pretty much Middle-Earth brought into the 21st century, with a whole lot more races, interbreding, and perhaps a shade less social acceptance. I mean, trolls, ogres, pixies, and whatnot (funny thinking back I don't remember seeing any elves I knew there was something I liked about his series.) have interbred, and mutated, and filled his world with huge variety, and prejudism in myriad permutations.

This is not the best Garrett book, but by the same token there is no such thing as a bad Garrett book. (at least none that I have read.) An excellent cross genre romp with generous humor, and very engaging characters. Well worth a read.
