I’ve got a six-pack of favourites to register this Easter week, some of which have been (more precisely, were) annual rituals for me for as much as a decade. In our labour-of-love high-school English teaching, people like me (I teach in downtown Toronto) from time to time have to make changes in our curriculum and move on. With the “double cohort” now behind us and the (lamented) disappearance of OAC (a.k.a. the Ontario “Grade 13”), the moment was ripe to mothball some classics and bring on others. So here’s a mixed bag of my English department’s archived literary greats, all well-thumbed and scribbled-on, with which my classroom cupboards are groaning-full.

Why not let a representative sample “into the wild” of BOOKCROSSING and hope that whoever finds them will have some of the enlightenment and pleasure that my students and I experienced? (I have, as it were, “reconditioned” the copies for an ongoing BKXING release; for the moment, I have them under AVL status).

In reverse-order of their coming into the world, these off-the curriculum mothballed “greats” are as follows: (1) Mordecai Richler, THE APPRENTICESHIP OF DUDDY KRAVITZ (1959): (2) Hugh MacLennan, TWO SOLITUDES (1945); (3) Virginia Woolf, A ROOM OF ONE’S OWN (1929); (4) Thomas Hardy, THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE (1886); (5) Charles Dickens, GREAT EXPECTATIONS (1860); (6) William Shakespeare, KING LEAR (“Quarto” text 1608: “Folio” text 1623). This last one is especially dear to me (extra journal entry on it is being entered).

If anyone out there in BKXING is wondering why these greats are off my school-list and what’s replacing them, please e-communicate via SERPENTS-TOOTH profile. Discussion is welcome!
