I'd heard of this book before, probably because a film was made of it, apparently. I'm sure I haven't seen the film, but it's a memorable title. It's actually a series of unrelated short stories, mostly set in Nottingham, and I assume that it was only the first of these stories that was made into a film. How they padded it out to 104 minutes, I'll never know. It's a very good story, just not that long. The other stories are perhaps even better, but less famous, and the last one seems to be purely autobiographical, which makes it a bit more interesting to my mind.

I enjoyed this collection of short stories. They are the type of story that sticks in your mind and makes you think. Most are rather sad, which may say something about the author. This book reminded me of "The Sky of Our Lives" (see my bookshelf) in author's attitude, type of story, representation of locals in their own accent and from their own perspectives.
