This book starts just prior to King Henry 8th marriage to Catherine Parr. Matthew Shardlake's good friend and fellow lawyer is found murdered, his neck slit, dumped in a fountain. It turns out to be the second in a series of murders, all relating to each of the seven vials listed in Revelations. The final murder, of the Great Whore, Shardlake must work out who the intended victim is and how to prevent it.
