A colorful portrait of Washington's Georgetown community in the 1920's, the book tells the story of a little girl's death and its effects on the African-American neighborhood. As its title might suggest, with swimming being an important activity in the tale, there is a bit of "water symbolism" sprinkled throughout.

This was not my usual type of book to read but really enjoyed it!!! The whole storyline was terrific and really made you think. Thanks BigJohnLefty!!!
I caught this book last night (June 8, 2004) at a Meetup. Maybe I am developing early Alzheimer's, but after I got it home, I realized I read this book in 2000! So, it is still available.
