Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle are two of my favorite "hard" science fiction authors, especially when they co-author a book. I haven't read this one yet, but I'm looking forward to it. It's the story of the near-destruction of Earth when a comet (the "Lucifer's Hammer" of the title) strikes the planet and nearly obliterates it.

The few survivors face a world ravaged by earthquakes, floods and fires and must somehow build a new human society.

This is an interesting edition of this book. It's in fairly beat up condition and has been through a number of used bookstores, judging by the several price stickers and store stamps that the book has accumulated. The dust jacket is almost shredded. It's actually a first edition hardcover published in 1977 by Playboy Press. Yes...THAT Playboy.
