Germans. I find German writers somewhat stiff and difficult in style (which may be a reflection of the translation) and the stories are terrific.
One could say that Death In Venice was pivotal in introducing conversation about same-sex desire into general culture, mindful of its publication date of 1912 and the phenomenon of a wide open sexuality in Berlin in the 1920's.
The other stories in this collection are Tonio Kroger, Mario and the Magician, Disorder and Early Sorrow, A Man and His Dog, The Blood of the Walsungs, Tristan, and Felix Krull.
