One of the strongest female characters in modern fiction is Ayla, a Cro-Magnon girl who grows up in a Neanderthal world, and ends up as a living bridge between the two cultures. This first novel in Auel's Earth's Children series is the rawest one, but I thought it was also better than the ones that came after.
