Shakespeare's Landlord (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 1)

I was familiar with Charlaine Harris from her authorship of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, which were the basis for the television series True Blood, of which I had watched a handful of episodes, so when I happened upon Shakespeare's Landlord, the first in the Lily Bard series of mystery novels, in a box of free books sitting on the sidewalk in my neighborhood, there was a glimmer of recognition, and I figured I'd give the book a try. I don't read a lot of mass-market contemporary fiction, nor are mysteries my usual literary fare, but I was up for something different, and I think I ended up making a good choice—although it turned out to be not quite what I was expecting.
