Jack is five. He lives with his Ma. They live in a single, locked room. They don't have the key.
Jack and Ma are prisoners.
What a fantastic and thought provoking book. Jack and Ma live in Room, a small, locked 'cell' where Ma has been for the past seven years since she was kidnapped. Little Jack was born in the room and has never known any other life other than Room, and what he sees on a fuzzy TV screen, which he thinks is all make believe.
On celebrating his fifth birthday, Ma finally tells Jack that there's a whole world Outside and she plots to escape, or rather for Jack to escape and get help for her.
The story would be pretty hard to bear if it wasn't told from the perspective of the little boy, and even then it's pretty grim. At the same time though, it's quite uplifting as their relationship is such a loving one and they adore each other and have a huge bond.
At first I found the childish narrative quite awkward but I soon overcame that, and really fell in love with little Jack, as it all seemed so real and believeable!
There are many things I'd like to say but I don't want to include any spoilers for future readers so I'll leave my review here. Just read it!

Apologies, this book has been hidden at the bottom of my TBR pile unjournaled for quite a while, but it has finally made it's way to the top and it's a great read. It's original, touching and although slow in the beginning I found |I couldn't put it down once it got going.
Off to find a new reader tomorrow.
