First published in 1972, it collects stories about Maori within settings that are Maori and with characters who are central to that setting — heroes, heroines and villains — rather than supporting players or sidekicks.
These stories introduce the themes of aroha, whanaungatanga and manaakitanga — love, acknowledging kin and tribal relationships, and supporting Maori identity — that run through much of Ihimaera’s later work.

This early collection of short stories by the author of 'Whale Rider' was a wee bit challenging for a non-Maori like me to read, however, it was a window into the Maori family unit and life as a Maori, which I really enjoyed. It would be even more interesting to know what Ihimaera's views would be like now as opposed to when this book was published in the 70s.
The book is now winging its way to 'Alrescate' in the US. ENJOY!!

Whee! How much fun this package was to open! Not only did I get a cool book but there were so cute little goodies to go with it! I love the bookmarks! (No, wait, I love the kiwi pencil...no, no, I really love the sheep pencil sharpner! Okay...I love all my goodies!) Thank you for the birthday pick-me-up!
What a wonderful collection of stories! These stories give the reader a glimpse into the Maori world. I've read several of this author's work and I think this collection of short stories is the most pure. They are simple but charming in a way some of Ihimaera's later work is not. 'The Child' was my favorite story; it was quite touching and reached beyond cultural boundaries.
Since Ihimaera has been "reworking" some of his early work I have to wonder if he would change any of these stories. I hope not as I think they are lovely just as they are!

We arrived too early for the Star Trek Experience but stuck it out until the doors opened. I left this at the head of the line for 'The Klingon Encounter.' We had been on this one before but the new 'Borg 4-D' didn't open until later. I loved the 'Borg 4-D!' What fun! I screeched several times! ;-)
