I'm a big fan of Caleb Carr's other books, so the fact that this one was a bit of a disappointment has probably led me to be a little harsh. Science fiction in my mind requires both an interesting premise and a believable chain of events leading from that beginning. This didn't provide either, as far as I was concerned. But like I said, I may be a little harsh with it...I hope it finds someone it suits better.
