This is the first in a three book series set in an alternate Georgian England where magic is real and and a serious discipline for academic study and research. Two vastly different gentlemen, the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell of the title, each approach magic in their different ways. The sinister Vinculus provides the mysterious link between them. There is considerable intrigue and readers will be left curious to continue the series. The world building is convincing and Clarke has taken some trouble to have the characters express themselves in ways and in language consistent with the historical period.
