Journal Entry 1 by BooksandMusic from Seattle, Washington USA on Thursday, January 15, 2015

The ending was unexpected, I didn't expect it though other readers may have. I was not that interested in the book because the beginning tells you how it ends but leaves room for misinterpretation. I misinterpreted.
A young couple finally goes back to the wife's, Cocoa's, home island off the coast of South Carolina/Georgia. The story, while some of it is in New York and concerns their meeting and life there, is mainly set during the few weeks they spend on the island. Mama Day is Cocoa's great Aunt and Abigail is her grandmother. These two old women are remarkable. The whole cast of characters on the island are eccentric.
I was kind of prejudiced against the book because of my assumptions of how it would end. When the ending came I was unprepared and my whole viewpoint of the book shifted.
