Baking Cakes in Kigali
4 journalers for this copy...
In Rwanda's capital Angel Tungaraza runs a small business baking cakes for her the celebrations of her neighbours. As her customers tell her their stories, Angel comes to realise how much each of them has to mourn as well as what they have to celebrate.
A uniquely charming and funny novel about life, love and cake.
This book was sent to me for by birthday by lovesOU. Thank you so much.

I did enjoy this book and the characters written about. In each chapter a cake is created to celebrate a certain event, and during the discussions of the cake or the live of the person ordering the cake I learnt more about living in Rwanda and it's modern history. Topics touched on included AIDS, homelessness, distribution of UN funding, genocide, bride-money, and the colonisation of Africa.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
You think it is gentle akin to No1 Detective books and the inspiration of those may be evident but this is far grittier, it canvases all the big issues confronting Africa. I loved it. Ideal for the 666 challenge. Recommended. Off to Australia as part of the authors starting with G ring

I couldn't get into this. While the big issues are interesting, especially written by someone born & raised in Zambia, the minutiae remain irritatingly twee & the dialogue stilted. This formal way of speaking may be correct, but added to the whole, it had me wondering why I was making myself undergo such a slog - so I didn't.
It now travels on to amberC, who may prove a more appreciative audience.

A good story, a great read and a genuine, believable, overall even, considering some of the topics covered, a feel good story.
