Synopsis (credit: back cover)
Unconditional Surrender is the third part of Evelyn Waugh's military trilogy after Men at Arms and Officers and Gentlemen.
Guy Crouchback has lost his Halberdier idealism. A desk job in London gives him the chance of reconciliation with his former wife. Then, in Yugoslavia, as a liaison officer with the partisans, he finally becomes aware of the futility of a war he once saw in terms of honour.
(Bought second-hand at the CAFDA Charity Bookshop, Warwick Street, Claremont.)
I haven't read the first two volumes of the Sword of Honour trilogy, but found this to be excellent.
This is a fine example of a thinking person's reflections on WW II. Nothing is straightforward, and among the tragedy and heartache there is also the poignant, the beautiful, and the downright absurd to be observed. Observed with wit and understanding, in the case of Waugh.
