This book is amazing. You will feel like you're reading a novel, but it is a work of nonfiction. This is Frey's memoir about how he climbed out of the hell of addiction. Imagine a 23 year old man from a fine family who was an alcoholic by the time he was 13 and managed to get through college as a crack addict. You will be astonished by his sheer will and determination. This is not your ususal "victim of addiction" story. Frey asserts his belief thoughout the book that "addiction is a decision" "...Do I or don't I. Am I going to take or am I not going to take. Am I going to be a pathetic dumbs***t Addict and continue to waste my life or am I going to say no and try to stay sober and be a decent Person." There are times when Frey really isn't sure what decision he wants to make. This is a harrowing story, and whether you belive the "addiction is a decision choice" or not, you will come away with having read an unbeliveable story that is well written and thought-provoking.

I totally dug this book in a masochistic sort of way. Honestly, it's an often painful, sometimes joyous read that I absolutely could not put down. I was given the book by a co-worker who had a similar experience. I found the anti-Hemingway writing style of short sentences and period-only punctuation completely engaging. James Frey's story is gripping and redeemed, and worthwhile read. I believe the book will be released into the wild soon.
