Gently humourous story with delightful characters told in the form of letters about a writer looking for new material in the aftermath of WWII. When she gets a letter from a stranger in Guernsey she ends up corresponding with a group of people there, and eventually visits and is drawn into learning more about the German occupation of the island. I knew nothing about the wartime history of Guernsey and the Todt workers before reading this and I suspect that as for the heroine, one of the motivations of the author was to inform the reader about what went on.
