'Emil, a gawky, bespectacled fourteen year old, longed for things to be as they were before her mother died. Before the big bedroom was gutted and redecorated.
Now it was matching blue and pale yellow, satin and muslin, cool and airy, the windows looking over the garden to the creek below.
