Got this tag book today. Thank you!

It smells of smoke, so I'm going to try to deodorize it a little before reading.

I had some trouble getting into this book. It starts out both wandering and dry, but once we have been introduced to the men we'll be following and the action starts, I found it quite interesting. There were some points where I felt the author was speculating a little too much, but it is understandable when researching a nearly-forgotten project lead by a group of men who were mostly private people. Until reading this book, I don't think I had quite grasped the huge quantities of art that the Nazis had taken. It is one thing to see a list of the number of paintings, another to read descriptions of the buildings, mines and churches modified to hold them and realize just how much work this involved.

This is one of 18 books generously sent to me by emmejo for use in the Little Free Library of Twinbrook (#7720), the OBCZ on my front lawn. :)

Thank you so much!

I read this book in 2014, and this is what I wrote about it after I finished it:

This book opened many windows for me. Most of what I've learned about WWII previously had been from the point of view of the Holocaust. This book was very different. It followed the movement of the Allied Forces in Europe from the Normandy invasion through the defeat of Nazi Germany, but it told the entire story from the perspective of the Monuments Men, those Allied Forces soldiers extremely knowledgeable in the art world, as they sought to protect cultural icons as well as locate valuable art appropriated by the Nazis from both public and private collections during their occupation of France and Italy.

I was flabbergasted by the vast amount of stolen treasure amassed by the Nazis, the manner in which they collected these items, and how speedily and secretly they stored these precious items away from the eyes of the rest of the world.

I found this book took a bit of concentration at first as there are several Monument Men which the story describes as moving from place to place as the Allied Forces followed the Nazi withdrawal. The story of the Monuments Men became increasingly intriguing and astonishing with each turn of this book's pages as it unveiled the truth of Nazi immorality and greed. It also revealed an amazing story often overshadowed by the media's revelation of other more disastrous events of World War II.
