This is THE book on life in the age of sail. There's no Jack Aubrey or Horatio Hornblower dramatics here, just the trials and tribulations of working on a square rig ship at the turn of the century. Dana's "everyman" account is considered the definitive work on the lives of those who sailed the seas. The tales of early California are also worth the trip. Read this book like a novel but keep in mind it's true!
