Merkwürdige Dinge ereignen sich auf der Ölbohrinsel Avalon II. Die Besatzung ist verschwunden, die Plattform nicht wiederzuerkennen, und das Wetter spielt verrückt. Da beauftragt Arthur Spangler, der Betreiber der Bohrinsel, den Versicherungsdetektiv Rudger Harm mit Nachforschungen. Als man eine geheimnisvolle junge Frau auf der Insel entdeckt, die kurz darauf von einem plötzlich aus dem Nebel auftauchenden Segelschiff mitgenommen wird....
