The Great War: Breakthroughs is the third book in Harry Turtledove's alternate World War I. The Confederate States of America (allied with Great Britain and France) is locked in conflict with the United States (allied with Germany).

The timeline in this series is the one Turtledove began with How Few Remain, ie: the Confederacy didn't win the Civil War with the aid of AK-47s, as depicted in the Guns of the South.

Turtledove's take on possible history is, as always, fascinating, but as I have said before his writing and characterisation are, at best, average. In particular, his characters tend to deliver political speeches to each other rather than actually talking.

But it's a good solid read.

Noticed a whole bunch of books come up on the Go Hunting page, albeit for Kingston rather than Canberra, so I raced over to Kingston to see what the story was. These are books with a price on their heads, but even so I almost bought one of them. Left them where they are for someone else to buy.
