A great and interesting book to read.
It gave me more insight and (inside) information about the Amish people, just like I had hoped it would. The series I watched on television awoke my interest, and this book satisfied (part of) that curiosity.
Thanks again, jo_an_a, for sending me this book!

Funny this book returning to Finland. And yes, it was a good choise from my long list of wishes.
I also have wanted to know more about the Amish people and this extraordinary ritual - most religious sub-cults try to keep their young in tight rein and hope they won't get a taste of the carefree living of "normal" teens and young adults.

Twenty odd pages behind. I think it is rather scary the way they go from one extreme to the other, trying out everything - including drugs. At sixteen they are still rather childish. If I think back of my own youth, our class started to party with alcohol when we were twelve, but in our family we kids were always offered some when adults had wine, so it was no big deal. So, when the partying began, I asked Mom to buy me a bottle of apple wine. She was a bit surprised, but I said I could get it elsewhere as well, so she rather knew what I was having, told me to drink it in a civilized way and I had rather early home-coming time. Being trusted meant I had to earn the trust and behave accordingly. But as alcohol had never been a tabu in our family, it didn't have the temptation of the forbidden fruit either. I've always preferred the taste of soft drinks to alcohol, so I soon switched to them. Nor did I like the effect it had on my classmates, so I didn't go to that many parties. I would imagine I would have had a different view, had it been something forbidden.
Hmm. Is the idea of ending education at the 8th grade to keep people simple and easily lead? Well, at least those with theoretical or artistic minds can leave at the age of 16, which is not as easy within other religious groups.
Are there still Amish / Anabaptist communities in Europe / in the Netherlands? Perhaps the book will tell (now on page 38). Perhaps Boekentrol can edit one of her JEs to comment?

In the middle of the educational dispute now. I would have loved to finish school at the 8th grade, if asked then and particularly when parents were pressing me to continue. On the other hand, had I been denied access to biology classes I would have fought for my right to the bitter end... Kids, always doing the opposite of what they are told to.
