Emma, a young woman from the Antebellum South feels called to the mission field in Africa. She marries Henry, a missionary to the Yoruba.
Life in Africa is not what Emma expected. Their marriage, and Henry's pesonality, are tempestuous.
It is Emma's writing box, and her memories of the old family slave, Eli, that keep her grounded.
I'd say this book was so-so. It wasn't great, but I did enjoy the parts about Africa, and there was drama that kept me reading as well.
