Dear Reader:
I'm not a big fan of Solzhenitsyn I'm afraid to say, but there's something overwhelming powerful in this work. Written in 1962, it was an act of exceptional courage on the author's part to have this work published in the Soviet Union. In language that is simple, direct, and profound, Solzhenitsyn paints a graphic portrait of life in a Stalinist labour camp, and in doing so illustrates to the reader how man can prevail over systematic, relentless dehuminization. For many in Russia, this was the first book to detail the terrors of the Gulag system. Yes, this slim volume, despite my opinion of Solzhenitsyn later writings, deserves to be called a literary "classic".
I hope that you'll enjoy it.
Sincerely,
R. Vronsky
