Very wonderful young adult book
From inside cover---
"The vivid story of a black family whose ties to each other and their land give them the strength to defy rural Southern racism during the Depression, this (novel) grows with convincing detail of character and situation, punctuated by tension-building incidents....Entirely through its own internal development, the novel shows the rich inner rewards of black pride, love, and independence,"

This has safely arrived and is on my list of Newbery Award winners to read in the near future.
I finallly got to this fantastic Newbery Award winner. At first I didn't think I would like it but after the first few pages, I was sold. The characters are vividly presented as reading progresses page to page. Another vivid presentation wa the stark difference in treatment of whites and blacks. Some parts were hard to read because they were so tense and emotion packed. Fortunately there is humor included to help ease the tension.
The entire novel depicts one year in the life of the Logan family through the eyes of the young daughter. (Family=Grandmother, Mother, Father, daughter & 3 sons.) It is a picture of the Logan's (and other blacks) being "put in their place" and how they kept their dignity through it all.
