This was my first Charles Dickens read. I had expected him to be stuffy and dull, but the way he strongly conveyed a sense of place and atmosphere impressed me. Some parts of his writing style required me to concentrate more than I was used to doing with modern authors, but the opening scene in the book got me hooked and I hope it will do the same to someone else.
