This was the first book I ever bought with my own money. We had a very go-ahead school library which had a bookshop. I gazed long and lovingly for weeks at this book before plucking up the courage to spend a whole 25p of my pocket money. It was and is a delicious read and I bawled my eyes out towards the end. I was surprised to find a few years later that there were other books in the series - but none of them had the same impact as this one. I think I realised just how powerful a story it is when, MANY years later I was driving through a park in New Zealand with my husband and said to him, "Whenever I see a lamp-post like that in a park..." and he finished my sentence, "...you think of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Me too!"
