I' just started reading this book - a couple of chapters into it. The only thing I can immeditely think is: Ohmygod, Livesey has so far merely changed the names of the Jane Eyre characters. Gemm Hardy has the orphaned who has the "evil" aunt, two female cousin and the fat and really evil male cousin. I've just gotten to the part where she is banished, not to the evil "red room" but to (I suppose) an equally evil sewing room.

Can people not come up with a better scenario than a blatant copy of a great classic? Were here editors asleep at the wheel on this one? What happened to the concept of plagiarism>?

I did like this better as I read on. But it's still a modernization of Jane Eyre
