The Death of an Ardent Bibliophile
5 journalers for this copy...
This was in a box of books from that yardsale I didn't mean to stop at and came home with 7 boxes of books. I just LOVE this title and thought it would make a great bookring since I haven't read it yet. From the back cover:
The wealthy, eccentric keeper of Dublin's famed Marsh's Library, Brian Herrick was a man unhealthily obsessed - with the writings of master 19th-century Irish satirist Jonathan Swift...and with pleasures of a more licentious nature. And now he has fallen victim to is own excesses - his final naked debauch and murder by poison painfully preserved on videotape. Even the normally unruffled Chief Superintendent Peter McGarr is shocked by the shameless predeath activities of this golden-curled misanthrope. And with forgery, pornography and rare book theft thrown into the mix, the question becomes not so much who wanted Herrick dead - but rather who got to him first.

Journal Entry 3 by Mundoo from Hindmarsh Island, South Australia Australia on Wednesday, December 10, 2003
What a surprise. This book arrived today. I am first on the ring and didn't realise it.

I don't normally read mystery books so it took me a while to 'get into'
this book. I found the descriptions a bit 'flowery' at the beginning and I
did get confused as to the characters for a lot of the book as they are
intermingled with each other. I did guess the murderer about half-way
through (process of elimination) and was right. The Jonathon Swift
references went over me as I am not a fan of his and didn't even like
Gulliver's Travels.
A light read once I knuckled down to read the book.

Sent onto puppymummy.
Arrived safely in Melbourne. I love crime and mystery, and I really want to bump this one up to the top of mt TBR but I do have a few other rings here that need to be read first. However, I will get onto this soon - housework? What's that again?
I really enjoyed this! I didn't pick the killer, but then I never do. The literary references were kind of interesting, although I am not familiar with Swift's writing so I had to work out what he seemed to be going on about - who knows, I could be completely wrong.
I will keep an eye out for more books by this author, I found the writing style excellent.

It's arrived! Okay, it arrived a good bit ago and I swore I registered but apparently I didn't. I'll take it to work with me tonight and see if I can get into it; if not I'll send it on ASAP.
Gave it a try. I was actually reading journal articles instead of this. JesseBC asked to be skipped so I'm sending it off to Jendudley on Monday or Tuesday.
I caught it! WOO hOO!! Seeing the mixed reviews, I am anxious to start it!
Will be sending this on it's merry way Friday. Thanks for sharing and sorry to have kept the book for so long.
