The lions of Al-Rassan

Guy Gavriel Kay is unquestionably the most literate author writing fantasy and imaginative fiction today. Consider this: he was the man engaged by the estate of JRR Tolkien to help edit and complete The Silmarillion after Tolkein's death.
His early trilogy, The Fionavar Tapestry, might be the best introduction to his work -- but I'm not ready to give that away just now. This book is an excellent standalone work. In classic GGK style, he creates a complex and richly detailed world and peoples it with believable characters involved in an intriguing story.
If you've never read his work, I envy you this introduction. I wish I was just starting to read him, so I could have the joy of discovery all over again.

I'll leave this book where others have been -- on the coffee table with the goldfish Juanito. Enjoy.
