Received as a complete surprise from HeyDollface! What a lovely, wonderful lady!
I'm glad that I read this, fastpaced but nowhere near as good as Angels and Demons. Implausible - cliched heroine and hero, random meetings with other characters which happen well beyond the likelihhod of coincidence. And an horrendous nail-biter (not) of a climax. Gee, who would have guessed Susan and David would end up at Stone Manor after all? EVERYONE! And the very final twist? Well, for heavens sake..... Try harder next time, Mr Brown. Resting on our laurels are we?

Received from Flambard - many thanks Tony!
Managed to read this whilst away on holiday and it made simple, undemanding reading. Not a patch on Angels and Demons I'm afraid (also passed on to me by Flambard) and I do agree with Tony's comments. It does appear that the author has been a little lazy and it appeared at times to be just another stereotypical thriller. I do hope that The Da Vinci Code will impress me more when I manage to get hold of a copy. Many thanks again to Tony for keeping me in Dan Brown books - I hope to be able to return the favour soon!

Received today from LondonEye! Thanks again for sending it to me! Both DH and I will be reading this book. I plan to take it with me to NY for our xmas trip so my other family members can read it and then it will continue its journey =)
Standard fare from Dan Brown. Similar male/female hereos from Da Vinci Code/Angels & Demons, good pacing (I suppose), usual twist every few chapters, if you've read any of his other books (I've not read Deception Point) you've probably got a good idea what the twists are going to be/or who the bad guy(s) really are. Still, if you've not read his other books then you'll get better enjoyment out of it. Beyond that he's merely rehashing the same thing every book he's done it seems.

CAUGHT IN WEXFORD IRELAND
I just finished reading this book. Definitely nowhere near as good as Angels & Demons. I enjoyed the book but I was able to guess who the "baddie" was and I guessed the elevator password and while I didn't figure out the pass-key - I was on the right track b/c long before it was revealed I knew what it would have to do with. It was an easy read and good enough. Perfect for a plane/train ride.

Thanks - a wonderful secret Santa package! And happy Christmas!
I think Dan Brown is my guilty pleasure.
This has sat on my shelf for years, and I decided to give it a go when I started watching "The Wire" on box set and really got into the whole intelligence/surveillance thing. I was hoping this book would have more of the same.
I got into it quickly and raced through. My only complaint is that I guessed/worked out a couple of the major plot resolutions about 3 chapters before Dan Brown spelt them out to his readers, which made those last few chapters a bit tiresome. But on the whole I enjoyed it, probably more than I should have!
I'm offering it as a RABCK now...

Glad to be able to sent a wishlist book to another bookcrosser as RABCK :-)
received it as a Colour My Life RABCK from birnsen. a wishlist book, yay! I have always enjoyed reading Dan Brown - I'm not even trying to figure out how much of his conspiracy theories are true or not, it's a very arguable thing. I thoroughly enjoy his books even without wondering about that.
Before reading this book I even thought saying Dan Brown is my favorite writer. Now I can say - definitely not. Overall, he still maintained the general idea of secrets, codes and suspense, but this one disappointed me. Firstly, too much of romance and lovey dovey fiancees stuff, not to mention the love triangle (though at least the latter contributed to some of the logic of the plot). Secondly, I was easily able to figure out who was the villain quite early. Thirdly, Dan Brown's inaccurate obsession with usage of Japanese characters or themes makes me roll my eyes - I'm not an expert at Japanese, but I'm pretty sure the name Tankado is not really correct and it should have been Takado instead (and even though it was necessary for one of the codes, Takado could have been used for that as well), also, Soshi Kuta doesn't sound like a realistic name either (and trust me, I've heard plenty of Japanese names), especially for a female, and it was stuffed with all the references with umami and haiku and kanji... Additionally to those, almost all of the scientific/historical references seemed placed unnaturally, almost forced to us to show off the knowledge of the writer, which to me never was the case in his other books. And most importantly, I figured out at least 80% of the final cipher/code, whereas it took some 15 pages and a bunch of incorrect guesses (or even no clue what it was) for someone who make a living out of it working in NSA. Seriously?
Nevertheless, I don't regret reading this book and thanks to birnsen for sending it to me, I really wanted to read it; I just was disappointed with it.
Reserved for a friend who told she wanted to read it.
