Journal Entry 3 by KateKintail at Dublin, Co. Dublin Ireland on Friday, April 13, 2012
I snagged this from the book buffet because I have read it and want to wild release it during the Dublin bookcrossing convention.

I read another copy of this book and had this to say:
This book has been on Mt. TBR for-EVER. I finally broke down and got the audio out of the library. Once I started it, I found I couldn't stop listening. I completely ate it up. I adore time travel stories and was excited about this one.

It started out fascinating as I got to know the characters. I loved watching Henry and Clare meet each other at various stages of their lives, nonlinearly. Meeting your future husband at age six... meeting your future wife for the first time even though she's known you for almost her whole life... trying to figure each other out and all the moving pieces. This was a beautiful love story with passion, rocky bits, excitement, trust, adventures, and cleverness.

The time travel concept was well done, I thought. I liked the idea of him being displaced in time randomly (or not so randomly, as he gets stressed), beyond his control. It comes with so many complications, though--the timing and the nakedness (inability to take anything with him that's not in his mind). It makes for some hilarious and entertaining moments. But soon I realized it was more than just some difficulties to overcome. The realism hit hard--he has to run, has to break into places, has to fight. Just when I thought the worst possibilities had happened to him... something even worse does. I actually screamed out loud during that hospital scene, after the frostbite. Absolutely terrifying--how was he to cope? And then... then the realization about his death... All the pieces fell into place so inevitably, like watching a car accident you can't look away from. "an impossibly romantic trap" really is what it is.

There are SO many moments that made me laugh or smile or rejoice, but just as many that made me cry or shriek or shudder. I love that this book explored every possible avenue from so many different angles throughout time.

Also, it was great to see TheBowieFolles' post-it on page 42. I found my 21st birthday on page 380 and put my own post-it there! :-)

Having been to Chicago before, it was so easy to picture where so much of this book took place. When I'm in Chicago for the AWP Conference in 2012, I am sure I will feel like I should expect to run into Clare or Henry or Alba (she's possibly my favorite part of the book).

I hope the next reader enjoys it as much as I did!
