I cannot rave enough about this book! Spectacular writing! I read this book in one sitting cover to cover.

Product Description
Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot. Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author's own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings that reflect the character's art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he thought he was destined to live.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Alexie's YA debut, released in hardcover to instant success, recieving seven starred reviews, hitting numerous bestseller lists, and winning the 2007 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

I'd heard really good things about this book, so I was excited to find it in the Cross-Canada bookbox. It looks like the sort of book my younger daughter would enjoy too. Thanks, Minerva101, for contributing this to the box!

I enjoyed this book and its comment on hope. It is a wonderful story about how hope and who has it and what they can do with it.

I just realized that I'd neglected to add a JE for this book when I'd read it earlier, before passing it to sjt105!

I loved this book and I'd put it among the top YA books I'd read in the past few years. I enjoyed the illustrations and found the story very inspiring.

I got this book back from sjt105 some time ago and since then, I've passed it to a member of my parent-child book club.

What a gem! I didn't expect to like it so much--it's a teenaged boy book--but the humour and the characters and the compassion and the surprising resilience of such a downtrodden group of people just stole my heart away. It has more than its share of heart-breaking moments, but they have a way of transcending mere sadness. I'll be leaving it at a curling club tomorrow in the hope that someone else picks it up. It's well worth reading. And the cartoons are priceless.
