In the afterword, Chuck Palahniuk describes how reading one of the stories in this book at book signings almost guarantees that some of his audience will faint (73 people so far), and that wasn't even the most disturbing of the stories in this book. It's certainly not a book to read if you're of a delicate disposition.
It's a surprisingly compelling book, though. It shouldn't be: the characters are uniformly unsympathetic, the overarching plot is contrived; the stories are mostly predictable (and considering they're all supposed to be written by different people, are in a disappointingly uniform voice); and in a way the horror is of the maximum shock value kind told around camp-fires. But somehow I found these unpromising elements added up to a book I just couldn't put down - possibly because the real horror doesn't consist of the scary things that happen, but in the way that people react to them, which builds up to a sense of horror much greater than any mere ghost story could achieve...

Picked up this book in the Wissensturm and as it is not my type, I will pass it on to a South African friend who lives here. Leona
