Nich Jans is a wonderful author, and his previous books about Alaska would have lead me to seek this one out, even if I wasn't already interested in Timothy Treadwell's story.

This is the best book-form account of what happened to Treadwell, and why it happened. Jans, who has lived in Alaska for decades, spending much of that time in the arctic Northeast, knows his bears and understands why Treadwell was drawn to them. He is also in a great position to explain where Treadwell went astray, and why his methods were harmful to the bears he deluded himself into thinking he was protecting.

This book is a good companion to Werner Herzog's movie "Grizzly Man" - the facts in both agree, but the film makes it clear that Treadwell was likely mentally ill, while Jans focuses on his relationship to trends in society (and Alaska) at large.

Caught at the Dunedin BookCrossers' Convention on 17/2/06. Hope to read it! Thanks for sending it over Booklemur! I saw the documentary "Grizzly Man" which was sad but fascinating, so am keen to read this book.
