"Lieut.-Colonel John Wynter and his American colleague, Captain Brad Parker, stand side by side as their assault craft nears the Normandy beaches before dawn on D-Day, the 6th of June. They are leading a Commando unit to destroy important German defenses, and few expect to return.

During the unearthly quiet preceding the attck both men are thinking of Valerie Russell. For years John had been in love with her, but had been away fighting in the Western desert: meanwhile Brad, heir to an American newspaper business, had been posted to England where he met Valerie, who was a Brigadier's daughter."
