I got this softcover at a local Barnes and Noble. It's a charming graphic novel set in a world where students with magical abilities can attend a deluxe boarding school that trains them in Magiculinary arts - cooking with magic. Protagonist Basil is there on a scholarship, as the fees are otherwise beyond the means of her loving dads, but she only keeps the scholarship if she can rate as the top student for two quarters in the term. Her chief rival is the Mean Girl Xynthia; her best pals are Villy and Addy (nonbinary and trans, respectively). And then the new girl, Arabella Oregano, joins her class - apparently with some truly spectacular magical ability. And Basil also thinks she's pretty cute, though she tries to tell her friends otherwise when they encourage her to go talk to her.

The pair do team up for their next major project, and summon a familiar together - a cute dog-like creature they name Tomato. And it seems that sparks are flying between them - until Arabella reveals a secret that could change everything. (Especially when Xynthia finds out!)

Magical cooking duels, kids with their entire futures on the line, adorable familiars everywhere (a young barista who hopes to get into the academy someday has a little floating ray-like familiar that looks like the decorative foam atop a fancy coffee drink) - and a nicely diverse cast of characters, all make for an enjoyable read.

Yes, there's drama at the end - but not to worry; our heroines save the day, and even the mean girl turns out to have hidden depths.
