The story is a semi-fictional account of the authors mother, a dance girl in the 1950s obliged to turn to prostitution. Although the author was only eight when she committed suicide, he is able to recreate a most evocative account with great details on music, make-up and clothing of the time. The book was completed while he was imprisoned for a series of murders.

Dark Autumn belongs to my collection of imaginary and fictitious books found at The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism by Emmanuel Goldstein. It is mentioned in Midsomer Murders Series 4 (2000–2001) No. 5.
