I got this hardcover from a local Savers thrift shop, taking advantage of discount-for-seniors day. The recipes were hand-scribed by Margaret Batt, making for a handsome book.

The recipes themselves range from "boxty in the pan" - a kind of potato cake - to blancmange made from carrigeen moss to Irish stew, some of them familiar to me and others totally new. (Some might be tricky to make - or to find outside of Ireland - such as "drisheen," a kind of blood pudding made with sheep's blood and mutton fat.)

Some of the recipes include notes, such as the one for Irish coffee ("perhaps not quite traditional, but give it time"), or for "Soyer's Soup" - aka "Famine Soup", with the footnote: "Tasted by numerous noblemen members of parliament and several ladies who suffered no ill effects & who considered it good and nourishing for the Irish peasantry in 1847."
