Doctor Ruth Weiss is writing a long art study. She is a middle-aged woman who feels somehow bored and frustrated with her own life.

I thought this novel ws going to be better-written, Brookner has disappointed me greatly.

I didn't like the ending especially. I guess it fits, but there is a lack of emotion to it all. It is realistic. If Ruth Weiss were a real person, it would fit. However, in my opinion, the problem is that the ending lacks punch.
