When Chris Barns, AKA Brolga, stopped on the roadside to tend to a kangaroo, he found that although it was too late to save her, tucked up in her pouch was a tiny pink baby kangaroo, injured but alive.
After rearing the joey back to health just as a kangaroo mother would, Brolga realised if he could help one he could help plenty more. And so began an extraordinary and life-changing journey.
Here, Brolga describes life with the joeys and how, through his care and love for his 'mob', a lifelong bond is created. We meet Roger and Ella and the other kangaroos, and come to understand how this unique relationship between one man and these beloved animals not only saved their lives, but gave purpose to his.
It was good to learn more about kangaroos and how Chris Barns became Kangaroo Dundee, the good thing about waiting 10 years to read the book is that I don't have to wait to see what happened next. I'll be looking up his website for updates on the kangaroo sanctuary, whether he's achieved his plans he spoke about in the book, see how the climate has affected the sanctuary, did he marry his partner and are they still together?
